WHy I make horror movies .....

1/29/2016

Wednesday night we held auditions for Sins of Man II : Vengeance which will start production in May and honestly I was blown away by the people who came in to read for myself and my EP Chris Fyfe.

I did the reading opposite of the actor reading for the part, which was nerve wracking for me at first because I have issues reading out loud but once I got into it I was fine with it.

To see people who love movies as much as I do wanting to be in my next film is an amazing feeling to me, it's hard to put it into words really. That is one reason I make movies because I want to be able to help make other peoples dream come true and maybe even give them their "big break" in the business.

I make horror movies specifically because I love horror moves and have since I was 10 years old. I love the slasher films of the late 70's all the way through to 1996's Scream and some of the more recent films as well.

Horror speaks to me more so then say action movies or superhero movies. I wanted to originally work with people who love the genre as much as I do and soon realized that if you have too many "horror people" involved in a project it can sometimes be counter productive but if you have a mix of "horror people" and "non horror people" you have a group that clicks well and everyone has the focus on finishing the project.

My Executive Producer Chris Fyfe is a "non horror person" and it the opposite of me who as you know I'm a total horror guy, we compliment each other in the creative process, why you might ask ? Becasue we look at the film making process from two different POV's .

MY POV : I'm a historian of Slasher horror and know the ins and outs of the genre and my focus is on staying true to the genre and paying respect to those that came before me.

HIS POV : He looks at the movie making process from the POV of a non horror fan in terms of what he sees on the screen appealing to a non horror fan who might want to see a horror film for a change of pace.

I make horror movies because I want t leave my mark on the genre and on the world so when my kids are older they can look on the shelf and say "my dad made these movies" .

We are in fill swing with preproduction on the 2nd film in the Sins of Man trilogy. Casting starts on Wednesday and we are excited to get that started so we can pin down a shooting from Mid April - late June with a DVD release date of Halloween 2016.

I have been getting alot of questions about the project, it's title and the tag line so I would like to address some of these questions here.

QUESTION : Why do you feel the story of Sins of Man needs to be made into three movies and not a "one off" movie ?

ANSWER : Originally Sins of Man was going to be a one off movie but when I was writing the script I thought I could make it into a two part franchise and then after I was half way through writing part II I knew I could stretch it to a trilogy and decided that Sins of Man would be a trilogy and only a trilogy because the horror genre was killed by a seemingly endless run of sequels but see a trilogy s different in that everything from the opening of part one all the way through til the end of part III will tell a complete story .

QUESTION : Can you explain the tag line It's About To Get Real ?

ANSWER : It's catchy and to be honest it makes people ask questions which was the intent, all I will say about it is that we are taking a darker approach to the story of this film and when you see the finished project you'll have a better understanding of the tag line .

QUESTION : Why do you use a costume for the killer and not just have someone dressed normal be the killer ? the reason I ask is because you have said you prefer your horror movies to be based in reality .

ANSWER : Brilliant question ! Yes I do prefer my stories to be based in reality but the purpose of the costumed killer isn't based on reality it's based on mystery, the killer wears the Mortis costume not to scare people but to hide their identity. Mortis is covered in black from head to toe so you can't see anything so you the audience can't look at them and say it's this character or that character. If we just had the killer wear street clothes the audience might notice their watch, necklace etc and that would ruin the reveal at the end of the movie .

QUESTION : Having seen Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis I picked up on some of the characters names and places being horror characters, locations writer, directors etc. used in the script will that be continued in Vengeance ? by the way I loved this about the movie .

ANSWER : First Thank you for saying you liked that about the movie that means alot to me :)  yes, as I have said a few times I do this to pay respect to those that came before me in the genre and to honor the people who have inspired me in my work, while we are currently working to finalize the script for Sins of Mam III I plan to have characters and places named the same way.

QUESTION : Do you think you will ever make a fourth Sins of Man movie ?

ANSWER : I never say never but it would have to be the start of another trilogy or a remake it wouldn't be Sins of Man IV  unless the fans really wanted a part IV then I would do it however the main reason I would like Sins of Man to be a trilogy is because I feel the horror genre was nearly killed forever with the countless series of sequels in the 80's and 90's .

QUESTION : What types of characters will we see in Vengeance ?

ANSWER : Some interesting characters that have a good story to them as well as a continuation of the stories of the returning characters and some things that you didn't expect to see going into Vengeance based on the way Rise of Mortis ended .

QUESTION : How do you decide who the killer is when you're writing ?

ANSWER : It depends on what I'm working with, the story and what the killers ultimate motive is really, it could be the best friend, the nerd, someone that isn't in the movie as another  character and is an escaped mental patient, like I said it all depends on how the story plays out in the developmental stages.

QUESTION : What surprises can we expect to see in Vengeance ?

ANSWER : You'll have to wait to see the movie to find out but I will tell you this much, i's about to get real for JJ and her friends !!

I hope this answers some of your questions about Sins of Man II : Vengeance , we are excited to start working on this movie and bringing it to you on DVD for Halloween 2016 !

STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY and as always Stay Wicked :)

how hard is your job ??

"How hard is your job ? Really, you sit at a desk all day and write your little stories and then you make a movie out of your story, it doesn't seem that hard to me at all so how hard is your job" ?

This is exactly how this person asked the question and I'm going to answer this question here in a positive way. My job is alot harder then simply writing a story and making a movie. here is a short list of my responsibilities for Wicked Carnival Productions as it's Founder / Owner / President ..

- Screenwriter
- Producer

-Director
-Actor
-Makeup FX Artist
-Casting Director
-Accounting
-Prop House Manager
-Set Designer (have help with this)
-Location Scout (have help with this)
-Running TWO websites (sinsofmanmovie.com & wickedcarnivalproductions.weebly.com)
Answering fanmail and questions from fans etc.
-Running TWO Twitter Accounts (@SinsofManMovie & @WickedCarnProds)
Answering fanmail and questions etc.
-Running TWO E-mail Accounts (sinsofmanmovie@gmail.com & wickedcarnivalproduction@gmail.com) answeing fanquestions, taking actors inf fo rthe upcoming casting of Sins of Man II : Vengeance
-Filling orders of Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis on DVD
-Running the Wicked Carnival Productions ebay store

So as you can see my job isn't as easy as it looks at first glance, am I complaining Hell no !! Because I am living my dream, working my dream job that yes is hard at times but I wouldn't trade being an indie film maker for any job on the planet because I LOVE MY JOB during the good times and bad, when I have been up for 37 hours on set working my ass off to get the script just right so my cast will have a clear idea of what I'm trying to get from a scene, when I've been up on set for over 24 hours and I'm tired and cranky yet I keep pushing forward because I know the pay off is worth it when I hold the finished film in my hand.

There is so much stuff that happens behind closed doors and behind the scenes that the general public doesn't see and has no idea about because all you see it the finished product and that's how I look at it when someone asks me "How hard is your job" ?

The general public only sees the stuff posted online about a movie and the finished product and that's fine and it's understandable that you would think the job of an indie film maker is easy but in the case of Wicked Carnival Productions I wear alot of hats in the company and I'm sure alot of film makers do as well because we simply don't have the resources to hire someone to fill every job needed on set, hell if you look at the credits of Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis you see under script supervisor "Well Maybe Next Time" because we didn't have one.

We all did so many jobs behind the scenes that it became comical to see our male lead making blood for a scene while I was on screen shooting one of my scenes. We simply didn't have the ins in the industry to hire a script supervisor. we didn't have a full production team in that we had a bunch of people that weren't IN the movie doing jobs behind the scenes, we would like to have a full production team on Sins of Man II : Vengeance but if we don't we will be better suited to do it on our own this time around.

IN CLOSING: My job as founder of Wicked Carnival Productions is very hard but fans and the general public only see what is posted online and the finished product so I don't expect you to understand how hard it really is to be an indie film maker. Like I said before I'm NOT complaining because I LOVE MY JOB, I really enjoy all the labor that goes into creating a movie for the horror fans around the world as well  as meeting you on social media and in person, meeting fans is my favorite part of my job because we are all different and we all have our favorites and we as horror fans are the MOST LOYAL fan base in any genre of entertainment and I love to talk, debate and discuss horror movies with all of you :)

Looking back and moving forward .....

Looking back at all the things that have happened since I decided to take a leap of faith in my writing ability way back in 2010 after I had seen Rob Zombie's Halloween II . I immediately started hearing rumors of Halloween 3(D) and it stalled many times before being shelved for good, I started thinking about writing a script for Halloween 3.

I had never written so much as a short story (outside of school work) let alone a script but I knew that I knew the Halloween Franchise inside and out and if anyone could write a script that life long Halloween fans could get into and get behind it was me. So I did alittle research about script writing and like I do with everything else I jumped in head first (a mistake that I will touch on later) I started coming up with characters and of course the main man Michael Myers I had Laurie Strode / Angel Myers in there as well as some fresh blood for Michael, my story also had Tommy Doyle and Lindsay Wallace in it because I always thought Michael logically would have come back for them at some point in the original Halloween 4 (which should have been Halloween 3)

I worked on the hand written draft for 3 months and when I was done I had 400+ handwritten pages that I then turned into a 289 page script which as it turns out is enough to make TWO Halloween films so I had actually written scripts for Halloween 3 and 4 .

The mistake I made was not researching the length of a script I just kept writing and writing until I came to the end of my story. I didn't know anything about structure of a script again this was something I didn't think about before I started writing. So after I wrote this long ass script which I thought was very good I started looking for more information about sending it to Dimension Films / The Weinstein Company (who owned the rights to Halloween Franchise) I came in contact with Todd Farmer who was supposed to be the writer for Halloween 3D after he left the project was when I started working on my script. I asked him via Twitter where I should send my script many people would think that I want to SELL my script to tthe Weinstein Compnay and become an instant celebrity but in all honesty because I'm a fan of Halloween I simply wanted the series to continue I was and am willing to GIVE my script to the Weinstein Company for no money and all I want it writer credit on the project.

Todd tweeted me back and said "Don't Send it anywhere, write your own story, your own script and make it yours" so I started immediately on a script that would be called Wicked Carnival and when ever I had a question about how to write something or how much detail to put in a scene or whatever I could tweet Todd and he would help me the best he could, I am forever greatful to him for helping me find my voice in my writing so much so that I thanked him in the credits of Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis .

Now you might be wondering how I went from writing Wicked Carnival to writing the Sins of Man trilogy, I have talked about this before but a brief overview I wrote Wicked Carnival and after sending it to people to read and getting all positive feedback I realized that the movie the way it was written would cost $100,000 dollars to make it and I knew I couldn't get that kind of money for my first project and I also knew that at that point n my career I was unwilling to work with others as far as cutting things from the script, I wanted to make the movie the way I wrote it without compromise, yet another mistake I would have to correct if I wanted to actually make movies.

After coming to terms with not being able to make Wicked Carnival which by alll accounts was my best script to date I was feeling down I knew I needed an idea that I could work with and make a movie with a low budget but be effective in the execution of the story. I started watching Halloween one night in January 2014 after watching that movie I watched Scream and started to think about the stories of these films and what I would do if I were going to write a "slasher" movie .

Picture
I started working on characters and like most people I started thinking about the killer first and his main target aka the final girl. this is the main plot point of every slasher to movie, right ?

Then I started working on the stereotypical characters that are in every slasher movie because they work,The Jock, The Nerd, the slutty girl, the best friend, the annoying friend (who we all want to get killed quickly) and I had the killer all figured out. I then started working out the kills and once that was done I started writing notes how the story would work and the back story that may or may not be revealed in the movie that set up the chain of events of the movie.

I wrote what seemed like 5 notes books of notes for the script and started writing the script in May 2014 and it seemed very easy for me to write the script once I did the leg work of the notes and ideas half way through writing Sins of Man I started thinking about what a sequel might look like and I started writing notes for a sequel as I was finishing Sins of Man I started to write Sins of Man II and about a quarter of the way through that script I started thinking about Sins of Man III but didn't want to make a series of films where each film would be just a little weaker then the previous film so I decided that I would write Sins of Man as a trilogy, while a rarity in the horror genre it does exist . In less then 30 days I had written the Sins of Man Trilogy and I knew this was going to be my first movie.

After I sent the script out to a few people to read they encouraged me to make this movie so I started looking into what it would take to make Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis a reality and I had NO CLUE what  was getting in to be completely honest with you. I knew I had the talent to write a script but did I have the talent to direct a movie ?

  • I went looking for cast and crew on craigslist because I had ZERO ins in the film world I was just starting out and someone said "Who's releasing the movie when it's finished" ?  and I looked at them with a dumb look on my face and said "I'm going to release it". They said "No what Production company are you working with"?  Once again I was in over my head and said "I guess I don't have a production company attached to the project".  This person said "If you're going to write, direct, produce this movie by yourself and this is going to be the start of you film career then you should start your own production company". So I went into my head and started thinking of names BLC Productions (the first initials of my kids) was the first thing that popped into my head but it wasn't write for the horror genre then I came up with Dark Wolf Productions, that was once cool but not exactly what I was looking for and I was sitting in my office, staring at the screen and the script for Wicked Carnival was poking out of it's spot on my shelf and BAM it hit me Wicked Carnival Productions was born.

I assembled my cast and we did two horrible table reads that resulted in two rewrites of the script because we couldn't fill roles in time for the start of shooting . Once we were set to go we got locations for shooting and showed up on the first day of shooting and WOW ! You wanna talk about getting hit in the head with a dose of reality, I had no idea how little I knew about making a movie.

As I have said before I had a VERY basic plan going into shooting set up the camera get sound ready to roll, yell action shoot the scene and move on. Man did I have a lot to learn and I learned it all on set while we were shooting .

We really only had a handful of issues that first weekend, they were worked out and we went on to wrap shooting on the first location in two days (we would later return to do a set of reshoots but we had the first weekend of shooting in the can, a proud moment for sure :)
Picture
Bridgett Keith who plays Jennifer Jaymes aka "JJ" in Rise of Mortis was a brilliant actress who I have many funny stories I could tell about her from set so here is one. After the first day of shooting I was driving with Chris Fyfe who was an actor in the movie he also did the sound design, audio and the editing of the film as well as a million other jobs and he said that I should talk to Bridgett about her mood on set and she was being quiet and reserved and the script had her being bubbly and happy so I said I would talk to her in the morning (2nd day of shooting) .

We arrived on set and I said "Bridgett can I talk to you for a moment" . we went out onto the porch and I said "You need to bring the emotion out of the character you need to be happy and bubbly about the trip you're taking with your friends" . She replied "But the script describes me as  quiet and reserved" and she showed me her script I then realized I had told her to bring the wrong version of the script to set, so that was on me. Another cool story about Bridgett, she's a quiet, smart kinda quirky person and we were in the car driving to the middle of no where for the second weekend of shooting and this idiot cut us off and almost side swiped us and she went from quiet Bridgett to Cussing truck driver in 2 seconds, I looked at her like "Who are you and what happened to the nice, quiet girl I got in the car with a few hours ago" ? I learned that Bridgett is actually a wicked coll person once you get to know her .

Picture
We had alot of issues while filming some that everyone encounters  and others that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy but we made it through and finished the movie on time (which I'm told is great in two ways #1 we FINISHED the movie and #2 we did it on time .

One of my friends in the industry said that I have something going for me because i FINISH projects and I guess many indie films that get started never get finished and this is something that I completely don't understand. I knew if I was going to start this crazy, insane and often seemingly impossible job of making Sins of Man I was going to see it through til the end and we did, thankfully we were a group of people who all had the same mindset and we all sacrificed so much because we believed in the project, and in each other that we had to finish the movie and we are all better in our roles because of it.

I went from writing the script for Wicked Carnival which would've cost $100,000 dollars to make to making Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis for less then $1,000 dollars ) after three FAILED crowd funding campaigns and I didnt et anythig stop me from reaching my goal, did I do it on my own ?? HELL NO ! I had the help of my friends and cast membersand when times got tough and most people would have quit we ALL came together and sacrificed so much to make this movie happen . I'm blessed to have found such amazing people to come in and do this project with and these are memories we will carry with us forever .

Looking forward ....

As we start casting for Sins of Man II : Vengeance one week for the writing of this blog, I look forward to expanding the Wicked Carnival Productions family as we add people to the cast for the movie and build relationships moving forward .

I know I have this film and a target release date of Halloween 2016 in mind then it comes a question of which movies comes out next from us, I have Wicked Carnival that I still want to release (Changed to fit our budget) and we have the third film in the Sins of Man Trilogy to release.

Of course at some point I would like Wicked Carnival Productions to be working on more then one picture a year but for now my focus is to build the WCP brand, get our movies out there for the worldwide horror audience and maybe some day make a HUGE Blockbuster horror movie but for now I'm happy to make my little indie films that make fans happy, nervous, and maybe even scared to go out at night .  ( LOL I can hope)

The future is bright for Wicked Carnival Productions and we can't wait to bring you Sins of Man II : Vengeance in the fall of 2016  along with the other movies we have in the pipeline which at last count there were 10 scripts ready to go :)

Stay Hungry, Stay Humble & As always STAY WICKED :)

Struggles of being an indie film maker ....

1/13/2016

Picture
Early in the development of Sins of Man I started thinking about all the work that goes into making a movie and honestly I didn't have a freakin' clue how much work actually goes into making a movie. I have said many times that I had a very basic idea of set the scene set, the camera and the sound up, yell action, shoot the scene and move on.

There were a million and one things I had no clue about and I learned on set very quickly.  this blog will be about some of the struggles we faced on the set that most everyone faces on their set as well as some struggles that i don't think many people face on their set .

Picture
Many people will automatically say MONEY is the biggest struggle in any indie film project and yes if you don't have alot of money there is alot of struggle in the process of making an indie film.

I feel the biggest struggle early
in the development of Sins of Man was my struggle with SELF DOUBT and my FEAR OF FAILURE. This is something that most people struggle with and I think more so when you are faced with putting your work out into the world to be watched and in turn be judged by your audience.

I know this was something I thought about all through the writing process of the first draft of Sins of Man which would be come Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis when I decided to make Sins of Man a trilogy. these thoughts followed me all through the filming process on a constant basis in the back of my head after ever take I would think to myself "was that scene good enough" ?"is the finished movie going to be good enough" . I can't be the only film maker that thinks these things ?

Just to name a few things that happened during the process we had several rewrites do to actors leaving the project, we had an actress who had already shot scenes in the movie not show up for her last day on set so an on set rewrite was done (not a fun thing to do) The after the first weekend of shooting at our primary shooting location the house on the property burnt to the ground the day after we left, we had to move the production an hour and a half further north east and I went from doing my Craven tribute cameo to being a bigger role in the movie because of this which as I tell people "I'm a director not an actor" but all in all I think I made it work as best as I could.

Another struggle I think most people encounter on set is working long hours day and night when they haven't ever done it before at one point during shooting we started at 11:00 am on a Saturday and worked til 5:00 am Sunday morning then drove 3 hours home all together I was up for 37 hours before I slept.

Long hours on set with new cast and crew, a new director can be frustrating for everyone involved and it usually works out one of two ways you either can't work together to finish the film which from what I have be told happpens more often then not or you all come together and work your asses off take care of each other in anyway needed and you finish the movie we all made the choice to do that and we released Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis on Halloween 2015 .

Picture
The last struggle I want to talk about is about getting the movie out there once it's finished, packaged etc. this is a HUGE struggle for many of us, I was lucky to have bull Moose Music give us a consignment deal to sell the movie on their website www.bullmoose.com (US Residents Only) and in stores across Maine not many people have options like that they use digital downloads sell DVD's on amazon, ebay, their websites etc. you can get Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis on ebay.com and our person website sinsofmanmovie.com for worldwide horror fans who want to check out the movie.
For the most part this is how indie films are distributed unless you have a ton of money or connections in the industry to help with these things .

I know alot of film makers put their work into film festivals to try to get them picked up for distribution, I wasn't ready to do that with Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis but with all that I have learned on set and what I continue to learn about myself as a writer and film maker I think Sins of Man II : Vengeance will be the film I try to get into film festivals and try to get distribution with .

Picture
In closing I would like to say that we all face struggles in this industry like any other business there is competition and I get that but imagine if we looked past the competition and helped each when ever we could, imagine how big we could build the indie film scene ?

We could show Hollyweird that we have a voice and we have the power to change the game on them like never before.
We can create amazing content in our movies, web series, short films etc and we can do it together we simply have to work together instead of against each other at every turn like the world tells us we should be doing.  I tell a short little story about the need to help people when you can, Everyone has to start somewhere and everyone needs help early on, right ? My brother in horror Jessie Gilbert aka Raz T Slasher who is a film maker , writer etc.  has helped me so much that I want to help him in return we say this if we are at a convention and he sells 100 DVD's and I only sell 20 sure as a business man I'm gonna be pissed off but as his friend I'm going to be proud of him, I will walk up to him and shake his hand and then ask him "What did you do that I didn't" and I will learn from his success and apply it to the next convention appearance.

Like I said I know there is a level of competition for consumer dollars but for me MONEY isn't the bottom line, I simply want to make good movies for horror fans to enjoy and if I make money on it great if not then that's fine also. I enjoy meeting fans, talking to them on social media, signing pictures and DVDs for them and taking pictures with them that is the one part of the job I love the most along with making movies for all of you crazy horror fans :)

STAY TUNED & STAY WICKED My Friends :)

answering 5 More fan questions :)

1/9/2016

I wanted to take some time to answer a few more questions that you AWESOME fans send me :) I love talking to fans it's very cool that you reach out to me and I love giving my thoughts and answering questions from you .

what is your daily routine when you're writing ?

Before I answer this question keep in mind that this is what I do and it's not for ever writer out there. I wake up at 7:45 and get my youngest two kids off to school, then eat breakfast then it's into the office to answer e-mail, calls, fulfill orders etc then I start writing for the day, break about 12:30 for lunch then back to the office for writing til 3:00 get my kids off the bus and start the daddy work  after dinner and bath time I settle in and watch TV / movie with the wife then around 10ish I write again until around 2 or 2:30 am then it's bed time and I start allover again the next day.

That's the schedule for just starting a project if I'm in the middle I spend alot more time writing and if I'm nearing a deadline I write around the clock and lock myself in my office.

Do you use special pens, pencils note pads when you write ?

Not really because I don't hand write alot of things for me its a waste of time. I have my phone with me 99% of the time and will usually write a quick note if I have an idea when out with my wife.  I always type my notes, outlines, character details etc because honestly I have really bad hand writing, if you have got an autograph from me you know this LOL. So no I don't use alot of stationary or special pens when I write now but when I first started writing I had pens and notebooks that were specifically made for each genre that I was writing or a notebook for every project I was working on, I stopped doing things like that in an effort to cut cost on office supplies late last year .

Would you ever consider writing a sports movie ?

I have learned to never say never in this game because I said I didn't want to use CGI in SoM but I did because I like the practical effects of classic horror but we ended up using the CGI to make the movie better in the long run. While I don't know  for sure if I will make a sports movie I can say if the right idea came along or if someone had a script that I really liked I would consider it, as I have stated before Wicked Carnival Productions plans to make more then just slasher films at some point we will branch out but for now we are working on horror films.

Where did wicked carnival productions come from ?

Wicked Carnival Productions came from the title of the first horror script I wrote Wicked Carnival, I worked on the script for 4 months with about a dozen rewrites and when I finished it and people who were allowed to read it said I should make it into a movie I started looking into costs etc. and realized quickly that it would take about $100,000 dollars make this movie (it involves alot of time at an amusement park) I knew that no one in their right mind will give a first time film maker $100,000 dollars to make a movie so I shelved the script and started working on Sins of Man and once my script readers came back and said "Make this movie" ! I started working on turning Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis into a movie someone said "Who's going to release the movie"? I said" I'm going to self release it" and the replied "You need a production company to release a movie" so I said "okay" and Wicked Carnival Productions was born.  on a side note we plan on releasing a rewritten version of Wicked Carnival in a few years after we complete the Sins of Man Trilogy .

what is your favorite part of being a film maker ?

As corny as it sounds I really enjoy meeting fans, signing autographs and taking pictures with them. it's so cool to me that someone enjoys my work so much that they want me to sign something for them or take a picture with them. I was at McDonalds with my wife the other day and a girl and her boyfriend walked up to me and asked me to sign a napkin for them I pulled out a sharpie and my business cards and I signed one for each of them. I also enjoy having an outlet for my creativity in my writing and then seeing my script come to life on set, at the first table read when they cast was reading the script out loud I thought I was going to cry because I was actually living my dreams and I love being the person that gives someone their break in acting in movies the is nothing like helping someone else realize their dream of being in a movie those are my favorite parts of being a film maker.

Keep the questions coming and I will answer as many as I can in the future :) THANK YOU for your support :) you fans are the reason we make movies !!

ten questions from fans .....

1/4/2016

Hey Horror fans, while we are hard at work getting things in order for Sins of Man II :  Vengeance I wanted to take a moment and answer some the the questions you folks send me via e-mail and social media because I think it's important to have an open line of communication between myself and you horror fans worldwide because I love talking about horror and anything really so here we go !!

QUESTION : What advice would you give to a new screenwriter ??

ANSWER : Write what you love, what you are passionate about, don't let friends, family, social media or anything other then yourself dictate what your subject matter is. show don't tell (this is something I struggle with) make sure there is enough action and movement on screen so the characters don't have to speak all the exposition etc it will bog down the movie. lastly I would say you are your audience if you like it chances are others will do be critical of yourself but don't over do it because there will be plenty of people who will do that for you and to them pay no attention because as my friend said to me "Can't never could do nothing".

QUESTION : Do you enjoy the "Classic Slashers" of the late 70's 80' and early 90's or the newer slashers like Scream ?

ANSWER : Both to be completely honest, I love Halloween, Friday The 13th, ANOES,  & Child's Play because they paved the way for films like Scream, Hatchet, Hostel etc. I have said it many times as a film maker I walk a fine line of knowing the history of the genre but also paying tribute to hit all while having an eye on the future of horror movies . I watch the classics over and over again for inspiration or as a slump buster for the block . and use horror names, places, dates, events in my scripts because that is how I honor those that came before me and during the filming of Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis I also wanted to do things differently and make a new twist for the genre.

QUESTION : Who is Your Favorite Slasher and Why ?

ANSWER : I could answer this a different way every time I'm asked because it's a complex answer but here it goes. My favorite slasher is Ghostface as for why because Ghostface can be ANYONE in Woodsboro it could be a teacher, a parent, a cop, a lawyer or your boyfriend and is best friend . Ghostface was a flesh and blood human much like Michael Myers (in the original Halloween) I like the idea that Scream could actually happen in real life that to me is way more scary then a killer who kills you in your dreams or a zombie chasing me around a camp or a killer dollwho wants my soul etc.

QUESTION : If you could have lunch with any scream queen who would it be and why ?

ANSWER : Another tough question but I would say Scout Compton because she seems so cool and down to earth, she plays Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie's Halloween& H2 and is currently starring on ABC's hit show Nashville.  She is simply an amazing person that I would love to share a meal with and just talk with.

QUESTION : Was it more difficult to direct or act in your movie ?

ANSWER : way harder to act for me personally, I have a hard time speaking in public and the camera didn't help I joke on my you tube videos there is a reason I direct movies and don't act in them. Originally I was supposed to do the "Wes Craven cameo" and be in one small scene and see how many people could find me in the movie but things changed and I had to take on a bigger role in the film due to things beyond the productions control and I think I did okay with what I had to do both in front of and behind the camera keep in mind I also did makeup FX for the movie as well.

QUESTION : Do you plan on directing other writers screenplays ? Why or Why not ??

ANSWER : Maybe in the future I will work from other peoples screenplays to create movies but for the foreseeable future I will be making movies from scripts that I have written and believe me there is no shortage of scripts for me to choose from, I have been in very early talks with some Maine authors to possibly make their books into movies but nothing has been finalized. I have so many scripts written that the next few years will see only movies I have written / directed and produced from Wicked Carnival Productions .

QUESTION : Are you successful ?

ANSWER : Yes I am successful because I know where I started, how far I have come, all the things I have gone through to get to where I am right now and most importantly I know where I'm going in the future .

QUESTION : What are your thoughts on "torture porn" like Saw and Hostel ?

ANSWER : There is a market for it, Saw really changed the game for horror in many ways they are all in my personal movie collection hostel I thought was good my favorite of that series was Hostel 2.  I think as long as their is a market for films like the titles you mentioned then film makers will continue to make those types of films.

QUESTION : Would you rather sign an autograph or take a picture with a fan ?

ANSWER : Both, I think the autograph is a cool thing I can give a fan but if they want a photo I will take one with them because I honestly love meeting horror fans we are some of the coolest people in the world and weather you're a fan of Leatherface,Michael, Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Ghostface, or Mortis we are ALL horror fans .

QUESTION : Do you want to make convention appearances ?

ANSWER : Yes ! I want to be able to travel allover the country (to start) and meet as many fans as I can at conventions as well as hopefully get a chance to meet some of the people who have influenced me as a writer  / director .

in closing ....

I really do love answering questions from horror fans allover the world, if you have a question, comment, suggestion about a blog post let me know :)

STAY TUNED & STAY WICKED !!
