Leatherface is the original American Slasher that gained popularity but is overlooked by the more popular killer from a 1978 ground breaking film.
Leatherface had a run if four films in the original series and the three films that were a mix of attempted reboots and attempted sequels to the original series.
This series still has alot of life to it but needs a solid sequel to get it rolling and not another reboot then a sequel, 2016's Leatherface should be a direct sequel to 2013's Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While I like the idea of going back to Leatherface as a teenager I don't think it's going to work and might make fans forget the previous films in away unless they shoot it in a way that could possibly tie into the previous films .
Halloween is my favorite movie of all time because if you watch thew series the way I watch it is's NOT an 8 films series but two trilogies watch John Carpernter's Halloween, Halloween II and H20 and that tells the complete Laurie / Michael story arc. (You can watch Resurrection if you like it but I like the ending of H20 as far as ending the Laurie / Michael story arc Reurrection to me was an unneeded movie in the series) Watch Halloween 4, 5, & 6 and that tell the complete Jaime Lloyd / Michael story arc. As for part III Season of the Witch was a great movie on it's own and should've never been attached to the Halloween series and yes I understand they were trying to turn the franchise into an anthology but they missed the mark on it.
Now with the recent news that Michael is without a home and the latest film Halloween : Returns now shelved will we see a new Halloween or did Michael finally die ?
Years later Mrs. Voorhees went crazy and killed all the councilors along with Steve Christy until she was on the wrong end of a machete swing at the hands of young Alice Hardy (played by Adrienne King) the massacre ended that rainy night at Camp Crystal Lake but the blood shed was far from over.
Enter the future ICON of Slasher legend Jason Voorhees who takes up his mother's machete to protect his camp and honor his mothers legacy. Jason has the highest body count of any slasher in history and that is a feat that may NEVER be matched or broken.
Jason also has the most films in his series then any other slasher so that helps alot in terms of the body count record, right?2010 say the resurrection of Jason and his legend, I for one loved the movie and think there is a place in each slasher for a reboot (another unpopular opinion) the reboot basically combined the first three or four films in the original series and rolled them together to make one kick ass killer movie.
With the many delays in the filming of the latest Friday The 13th film slated now (hopefully) 2017 I hope the deliver a killer Friday movie there's a formula to it a very simple formula . (Scream reference) for those of you that don't know Sean S. Cunningham said the formula for a Friday film was a fresh pair of tits or a kill every 7 minutes, it's really that simple haha.
Through 10 films in the original series the one crossover film and a reboot Jason is still alive and kicking and we will have to wait and see if the next film comes out in 2017 as planned or if they finally bury Jason for good.
1984 saw the arrival of another slasher that would be come an ICON Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare On Elm Street directed by the late Wes Craven. Freddy was brought to life my Robert Englund who is an amazing actor.
A Nightmare On Elm Street was another series that changed things up instead of having a flesh and blood killer they created a killer who killed you in your dreams.
Freddy started out a straight up killer and as the movies went on he became less scary an more funny nd that killed the franchise for me until 2003's crossover film Freddy VS Jason which was awesome I don't care what the majority of fans think I think the movie lived u to the hype and created new fans at the same time. Freddy had alot of creative kills because lets be honest here a person can dream so pretty freaky, weirs shit and that place becomes Freddy's playground.
Through 7 films in the original series, one crossover film and one reboot Freddy is on life support at this point, however with a planned 2nd reboot to the series maybe Freddy can comeback from the horrible 2010 reboot or retelling where they completely fucked the franchise and long time fans .
In the first three films Chucky would attempt to transfer his soul from the doll to Andy Barclay then from there the series went weird andlost any steam it had with 1998's Bride of Chucky directed by Ronnie Yu this was followed in 2004 with Seed of Chucky directed by Don Mancini which say CHucky and Tiff have a child (made little sense at all)
Then in 2013 Don Mancini directed Curse of Chucky and Wow he blew the doors off the coffin of Chucky and returned the series to it's once scary beginnings.
Scream is what I call a "game changer" it took everything we love and hate about slasher movies and threw it in our faces in a good way, scream is a modern classic in my opinion. Some say it's too "Party of Five" or "90210" for a slasher movie but I disagree it worked with that and who was popular in 1996 and came out as an instant classic slasher film .
Scream was different in that the killer Ghostface was flesh and blood a human he or she could be ANYBODY ! This is what drew me and I'm sure many fans to this film and ultimately the series . Wes Craven helped create TWO great horror icons and for that we are forever greatful to him.
The Need to create new slashers
That's why I created Mortis and gave him a look sort of like Ghostface because I love the character and wanted to pay respect to the concept and to Wes Craven, some of you will and have said I was an easy idea to take but I didn't "rip off" Ghostface I was paying tribute to Wes Craven ans the Scream series.
I have several Slashers in the works and you will see references to classic slashers and their characteristics in a tasteful way done out of respect for them not to take away from them.
If we don't create new Slashers for you the fans then eventually Leatherface, Michael, Jason, Freddy, Chucky and Ghostface will die forever and you'll get stuck with movies like Twilight, do you really want that ?
