This is a question I was asked today for about the millionth time it seems so I decided to answer this question. First off I want to tell you that the question itself is interesting and the answer is my opinion and my opinion alone.
What is interesting to me might not be interesting to you because interest is 100% subjective. I'm interested in slasher movies like Halloween, Friday The 13th, ANOES, Childs Play, and Scream while the entire world is taking about Star Wars VII : The Force Awakens, Batman V Superman, TMNT 2 it's not that these films don't interest me it's simply a matter of what I'm focused on. I will see all of these film in time and yes I read spoilers (It doesn't bother me) because by the time these films come out on DVD I will have forgotten what I read about them and the film will be new to me.
Now, onto what makes an interesting story to me, a very good protagonist i.e Laurie Strode, Alice Hardy, Nancy Thompson, Sidney Prescott etc. and with every good protagonist you need an equally good if not better antagonist i.e Michael, Jason, Freddy, Ghostface etc. that is first in my mind when I look at if a film interests me.
Next I look at the surrounding characters are there any that I can look at and care for as the story moves forward I'm a huge fan of the Randy Meeks character in the Scream series that character was enough for me to pay money to see Scream 2 and when they killed him off in Scream 2 I was pissed off but then later on when I started writing Sins of Man I understood why they did it .
Another thing is I have to be engaged during the run of the movie or I lose interest quickly and if I lose interest I usually turn the movie off . I like movies where the audience has to pay attention throughout the film to try to figure things out as the story moves along. like in Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis I wrote it in a way that made the viewer have to watch it for the clues that pointed to the killer and that came directly from my love of the Scream series.
Now to be more broad with what I find interesting in a story in Star Wars IV - VI I like the struggle between Luke and Vader, in the prequels I like the struggle between Anakin and weather he was going to be on the light or dark side of the force even though I knew the choice he would ultimately make because of the knowledge of the first three films the way it was done kept me on my toes. Batman V Superman has my interest peaked because I'm a superhero movie fan, I'm an Arrow junkie as well as a Hawkeye fan. and this movie will be the Dawn of the Justice League . TMNT 2 is a film that I know I will like because it's the second film in the series (rumored to be a trilogy) and it will be the debut of Casey Jones . (played by The Green Arrow himself Stephen Amell)
People think because I write, direct and produce horror movies that I don't like or watch other genres of film and that can't be furthest from the truth I like all different types of movies Action, superheros, Horror, comedies, romcoms. I think I have written a script in each of those genres and who knows someday I might try my hand at those types of films however right now I'm interested in doing horror films specifically slasher films.
