This was a very difficult weekend of shooting in Scarborough we had a tight schedule and alot of scenes that needed to be be shot over again. First one of my actresses had a prior commitment and had to leave set as quickly as possible (Easy to deal with) she traveled several hours to shoot 10 minutes of film and then turned around to travel several hours back home LOVE her for that! Then our cameraman & Co Directors Chris Fyfe and myself were late due to car trouble (We travel together) then once we got to set and started working several small issues came up but we worked together to set things in motion. Rebecca Flaherty came in to help out on set and film the redone scene for the Trisha Taylor Character she was amazing :) we had to rework the scenes for many reasons and one of our cast members suffered an injury while on set but kept working because they play a vital part in the film and the project over all. I feel horrible that he was injured on set but he's a hell of a guy and he's going to push forward :) We had several issues with planning out the scenes due to my own inability to stop looking at the big picture and focus on only what the camera sees during a single shot LOL once I got that taken care of it was off to the races ! We have one more day of shooting left and we will WRAP Shooting on Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis we have come so far and yet the journey is just beginning in alot of ways as we get ready to start POST production and looking into Conventions, meet and Greets and Festivals to help spread the word about the film. This has been an amazing experience for me personally and professionally I have grown so much as a writer and filmmaker and made some really cool friends who have helped make my vision come to life. I had a fan ask me in a very lengthy e-mail if I would post a blog about my favorite Horror (Slasher) Franchises and number them in a top 10 format with a short note as to why the film got a curtian number in the count down, so let's get started.
NOTE : The franchises will be listed in order of my favorites. 5. Childs Play 6. Bride of Chucky I didn't like the silliness of this film. too funny and Chucky is a joke in this film. 5. Seed of Chucky The laugh factor was too high for me in this film as it was more funny then scary. 4. Childs Play 3 I disliked the location of the film however I like the fact that they stayed with the Andy Barclay / Chucky Storyline. 3. Childs Play 2 I really did like this film alot, the fact that Andy is still a kid struggling to have people believe that Chucky is alive and after him along with the casting of Christine Elise I thought really made the movie one of the best of the series. 2. Childs Play I really love the originality of the story and the way they wrote the movie really added something to the story, Catherine Hicks was amazing in this film. 1. Curse of Chucky This will raise alot of eyebrows for sure rating the 6th film in a franchsie ahead of the original but hear me out. I think the way they brought everything back to the beginning ( hell before the events of Childs Play) was great and it really tied things up nicely. 4. A Nightmare On Elm Street 9. A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010) I really disliked this film for many reasons mainly because Robert Englund IS Freddy Kruger Period without a question, I disliked the changes to the mythology of Freddy as well. 8. Freddy's Dead The cheesy factor of this film made it bad for me, the acting wasn't horrible but most of it wasn't good either, at this point Freddy was a joke and the one liners were stale. 7. A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 : Freddy's Revenge This movie was good and really well made, The story with Jesse and Lisa was a good storyline but it really dragged on at points and they blurred the line between Dreams and reality when Freddy shows up at the pool party. 6. A Nightmare On Elm Street 5 : The Dream Child This movie was more of the same cheese but had it's good points and the dream sequences were up there. I liked the Comic book death scene the best. 5. A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 The Dream Master I liked this film in alot of ways but really didn't like the ending much the fight scenes were a high point in this film. 4. A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 : Dream Warriors This film was very good in alot of ways, I like that they brought Nancy back to end her story with Freddy with that said I think they did the right thing with killing Nancy off at this point in the series it was the right time, I thought they would've killed her in the beginning of part 2 but they waited til part 3. 3. Freddy VS Jason This will surely result in a bunch of comments putting the most successful film in BOTH franchise in the #3 slot but hear me out. first off if you're going to do a Freddy VS Jason movie it has to be Kane Hodder VS Robert Englund . In my opinion Kane Hodder IS Jason Voorhees much like Robert Englund IS Freddy Kruger. I disliked Ronny Yu directing this film because he wasn't a fan and outside of the original films (1981 & 1984) he hadn't seen any of the films so he didn't know the back story of each ICON. I did like the kills in this film and the right amount of comedy with slashing. but it would've been a 100 times better with Kane as Jason. 2. Wes Craven's A New Nightmare This was an amazing film for many reasons, I like the way the brought the Freddy Character into the real world (Much better then the blurred lines in Part 2) this film was very well written and the acting was one of the best of the series. I enhoyed the Dillion character and everything the story does to this littel kid, they really went back to the Scary Freddy and not the wide cracking Freddy of the previous films. 1. A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) I put the original film in the #1 spot for alot of reasons, it was innovative, it was fresh, ANOES really changed the game for slashers in alot of ways. Freddy was a dream demon who came after you in your dreams unlike Jason or Michael who stalked you around Haddonfield or Crystal Lake. it was somethign that kept many kids up at night singing One, Two Freddy's coming for you ..... 3. Halloween 10. Halloween Resurrection This film wasn't really needed in the series for many reasons and here's where I'm going to challenge my fans watch Halloween (1978) Halloween II and Halloween H20 and you will have watched the perfect telling of the Halloween Series, by that token watch Halloween 4, 5 and 6 and you watch a completely different trilogy. 9. Halloween III : Season of the Witch This movie by it's self is a very good film however you slap the name HAlloween III on it and you lose your target audience, with that said if you caled this film Season of The Witch it would have done alot better in Horror fans eyes. 8. Halloween 6 : The Curse Of Michael Myers This film was way out there if you watch the films in order but if you watch 4, 5, and 6 as a seperate trilogy it works. I really enjoyed the story of the curse of thorn as a way to explain Michael's actions but in some ways I didn't like it. Donald Pleasence gave his final performance as Dr. Loomis in this film and the series really lost alot with his passing. 7. Halloween 5 : The Revenge of Michael Myers This film was a good film after the events of Halloween 4 I like the story telling and the acting was fair in it Danielle Harris was very good in this film. I didn't like the ending at the Police Station though, it was too over the top. the one thing I really liked was the man in black angel of the story. 6. Halloween 4 : The Return of Michael Myers Thank God they brought Michael back after Season Of The Witch what they hell were they thinking!? Danielle Harris was amazing in this film. I like that they tried to keep it family related with Laurie Strodes daughter being the target of Michael. 5. Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 I really did enjoy this film because of it's complex story arch. alot of horror fans (even Zombie fans) shit allover this movie but I think it's mainly because alot of people couldn't follow the film and it's attack on your metal stability there were alot of confusing moments in this film however if you watch it more then once you will start to understand it. I know the white horse was a major issue for some fans it's explained in the opening moments of the film for Christ's sake people. Another point of confusion for most fans was the Ghost of the mother, that's a vision in Michael's head because he never stopped being a 10 year old boy. and that is why he sees himself as a 10 year old boy when he sees his mother. When Angel finally snaps she begins to see her mother and younger Brother. I really love the ending of this film and if you watch the director's cut this is the end of the Rob Zombie' Halloween series Michael and Angel both die and they are a family again. 4. Halloween : H20 This film was INCREDIBLE ! a perfect sequel to Halloween II it wraps the story up perfectly, there really isn't much wrong with this film. I didn't like the stupidity of the characters. I loved the mental wall Laurie puts up with people and the whole secret identity she has as well as the reveal to her boyfriend. 3. Rob Zombie's Halloween I LOVED this movie (as a Zombie fan) I know alot of you didn't like it because there was too much backstory well to this I often say to people ANOES is nothing but backstory and Friday The 13th is ALOT of Backstory so Zombie when he did his version of Halloween he made Michael a little white trash but that's what he wanted to do to try to explain why Michael became a serial killer (much better then the curse of thorn) . Scout Compton (My Woman Crush Wednesday every week) did an AMAZING job and brought somethign different to the Laurie Strode character. Danielle Harris made her return to the series and really played a good role . Brad Douif was great as Sheriff Brackett. this was a very well made film. 2. Halloween II (1981) This film was great in that it's basically Halloween 1.5 and starts the very next moment in time after the events of Halloween. this was a perfect sequel. The scene with the shoes falling off the nurses feet was AWESOME ! 1. John Carpenter's Halloween This movie changed my life it was the first horror movie I ever watched and it scared me ! I love the storytelling, the way the film unfolds slowly the characters and this film is one of the reasons I started writing screenplays nad make films. 2. SCREAM 4. Scream 3 This film was by far the worst of the series from the story to the acting to the scooby doo aspect it was bad, I will say I loved the reveal at the end of the movie and they way they tied it all up at the end of the film. 3. Scream 2 I liked this film but it was like okay what are they going to do to top the amazing work in Scream, they came with a solid story arch and alot of creative kills. 2. Scream 4 Honestly I watched this movie opening weekend in a packed theater and as I was watching it I was pissed thinking this movie is horrible it wasn;t until I was sitting with my wife at Burger King after the movie that I sat back and realized that it was a good film because it was a typical Scream movie, I liked the acting, the story was great and I think they left it open for Scream 5 and 56 if they ever choose to make them. 1. Scream The game changing film that resurrected the Slasher genre in the mid 90's is one of the best horror films in history the story, the characters, the killer was instantly ICONIC I really loved everything about this movie ! 1. Friday The 13th 12. Jason Goes To Hell : The Final Friday Where do I start with this film ? the mask was horrible, the story was way out there only making reference to the original film and parts of 2 and 3, I think they really tried to do what the writers of H20 tried to do and make a direct sequel to part 2 and forget the rest of the films and failed horribly . the story is bad in this film the kills were good but I couldn't get into the body jumping deal at all. 11. Friday The 13th Part V : The New Beginning This film was just like Halloween III because they tried to make a film without Jason and it just didn't work at all. the movie its self was good but not having Jason killed it for me, I enjoyed the continuation of the Tommy Garvis storyline but thought it could be done differently. 10. Jason X This film was interesting to me and I actually like it but the uber jason was alittle hard for me to swallow even though it looks awesome. I loved the story and the leap into the future and taking Jason to space was a horrible horrible idea. 9. Friday The 13th (2009) I ranked this very low on the count down for a few reasons , no Kane Hodder again killed this movie for me in some ways yet Derek Mears was a very good Jason, I hated the fact that they made it all about Jason protecting his weed crops (Kind of too far with that) I like the idea of how he gets the mask that was great the biggest thing I liked and disliked about this movie is the tunnels under the camp I liked it because it answers the question How was Jason always able to catch people, I dislike it because I think it's too much of an answer to that question. 8. Friday The 13th Part VI : Jason Lives I loved this film ! I loved the conclusion to the Tommy Garvis story arch, I loved the bending the Sheriff in half death, I loved how they "killed" Jason" 7. Friday The 13th Part 3 (3D) I love this film because it's where Jason gets the hockey mask and the character of Shelly is pretty cool (We all have alittle Shelly in us) I think the story was pretty good except for the part with the girl having a run in with Jason a few years earlier that was alittle much for me. 6. Friday The 13th Part VII : The New Blood I loved the Carrie VS Jason arch was very well thought out. The film had some cool kills and good acting I really loved the Tina character. the film was an interesting thrill ride from begining to end. 5. Friday The 13th Part VII : Jason Takes a Boat Ride I mean Jason Takes Manhattan This film had alot going for it because it was the first attempt to take Jason out of the Crystal Lake area and it works for the most part the kills were pretty god I loved the scene in th bathroom that was good as well as the death on the dance floor. I really disliked the death of Jason in this movie it made very littel sense (If any) and kinda killed everything that happened prior to it in the film. 4. Friday The 13th Part 2 This is the film debut of adult Jason and it was done very well, I loved Amy Steel in this film she was cool "Paul There's someone in this fuckin' room" was a great line ! I loved the jump scare at the end of it as well. 3. Freddy VS Jason This film was okay in that they made a Dream match happen on the big screen but who really won the fight ? what was the purpose of the end scene ? Did Jason win by cutting Freddy's head off ? Did Freddy win because it was all a dream ? it was well made and all the kills were great and like I said above in the ANOES list this film is the most successful film in either series so it did what it was supposed to it made money and made us wanting more. 2. Friday The 13th The Final Chapter This was the first attempt to end" the series and it was a great film and I really loved the direction of the film, I think they should've shown the death of Mrs. Garvis, I think the film was an honest attempt to kill Jason for good but fans (as we always do) wanted more so Part V was made and so on. 1. Friday The 13th (1980) This movie was ICONIC in so many ways, I loved the Mrs. Voorhees character (RIP Betsy Palmer) it really was very well made on such a low budget and what they had to work with. The characters were interesting Alice was such a bad ass in so many ways, I enjoyed watching her go from the shy awkward girl at the beginning to this strong kick ass girl at the end when she chops Mrs. Voorhees's head off. The jump scare at the end is the most memorable scenes in horror film history. Wrap Up I know I left off Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saw, Hostel and many others but these are my top five horror / slasher series and my honest opinion about each film in the series. Agree or disagree with me, let me hear about it. This blog is the LONGEST blog I have ever written and I did it for a fan who asked me to do it, I enjoyed doing it but it was harder then I thought to sit down and put all these films in order and then give reasons why I like or dislike each film and I was often conflicted with my own choices about the order of films in my own lists WTF !?! I hope you enjoy this blog and my list and feel free to chim in with comments, I can't wait to chat with you guys. As we near the finish line on production on Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis I'm sitting here thinking about everything that has happened since this idea came to me almost two years ago after watching John Carpenter's Halloween and Scream back to back one night.
I had this idea of all the things I love about horror movies as well as all the typical stuff that's in EVERY horror movie and I started thinking about how I would apply them to a script and into a story that I wanted to tell. The first thing I did was write out the character's and a (very) short bio for each one, I basically filled the basic horror characters list, the wallflower, the slut, the jock, the nerd, the best friend etc. then I started working on the magic of course I'm talking about the kills I did that quickly in the thinking process so I knew exactly what I wanted to do to each victim. After working out all the kills I started working on my killer, who was this person, what they would wear and of course WHY they were killing all of these people. I was lucky enough to receive a license from California Costumes Company to use one of there costumes as the "Mortis" costume so that was that. check one thing of the growing list of demands. I then started writing Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis and as many of you know I wrote Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis along with TWO other films in less then 30 days making SoM a Trilogy. Through the writing process I started building a fan following on Twitter with the @SinsofManmovie profile as I started talking to horror fans worldwide I gained confidence that SoM was a good idea and began casting. Through the casting process I met several actors who came on board and believed in my vision. We ran our first campaign via Indiegogo.com and we raised an underwhelming $25 dollars. I reworked the budget and asked my cast to have faith in me and the project would still be moving forward. Between the first and second campaign I had a meeting with the local school board about filming the movie in the local High School and I was rejected based on "Too much risk" which at first I was pissed about but then I thought about it and said to myself "that's fine we will do the movie somewhere else and then when we make it a success they will be asking us to film part II in their school" I reworked the campaign and launched it again via Indiegogo.com this time raising $100 dollars to total (after fees) $101 dollars and some change. Did I let this stop me ? no way. I went back to the drawing board and and asked my cast if they would be willing to work for no money just to be in a movie ? they basically all said yes with a few unable to remain on cast. we regrouped recast the roles that needed to be filled and moved on and here we are today. We all had alot to learn and no one more then me and I'll be the first to admit that . Hell after the first weekend of shooting this project almost didn't continue but with the help of my Executive Producer Chris Fyfe he rallied the troops and we are now on knocking on the doorstep of a completed film this has been a wild, crazy, nonstop roller coaster of a ride and believe it or not I wouldn't change anything about it. I became a better film maker because of it, I became a better writer because of this film and I have met some amazing people because of this film. In closing I want to say THANK YOU to the entire CAST and CREW because this movie doesn't happen without you guys and gals showing up working long hours (at one point we shot from 3:30 in the afternoon til 5:00 the next morning) driving long distance on your own dime to get to set every weekend. I know THANK YOU doesn't cover what you have done for me but it's all I've got. THANK YOU to Chris Fyfe for being on board with all the changes for being my 2nd director and making sure the film fits together, you have an amazing eye for film making and I'm blessed to have you on my team. THANK YOU to the AMAZING people in the towns of Solon and Sebec Maine for allowing us to film in your beautiful towns :) Sebec Country Store has amazing food and great people there. THANK YOU Bridgton Community Center for allowing us to film in your building :) and last but not least THANK YOU to the AMAZINGLY AWESOME Horror fans Around the world who have reached out to us in support of Indy Horror we look forward to delivering Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis on DVD in October ! |
