By Jamie Santamore Wicked Carnival Productions has adopted the slogan #MakeSlashersGreatAgain and that hashtag might seem like a political statement and really that couldn't be further from the truth. What #MakeSlashersGreatAgain means is what it says I want to return the Slasher film back to the story driven films like John Carpenter's Halloween and the blood spilling, ass kickin' films like Sean S. Cunningham's Friday The 13th. Look back at the first films in each of the Godfather's of Slasher Films from 1974's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to 1978's Halloween, 1980's Friday The 13th and 1984's A Nightmare On Elm Street . These films are ICONIC for their own reasons and some would say the second films in each series was equally good but after that they quickly became stale and more about BOX OFFICE $$ more then the actual films themselves and that is the reason why Slashers were nearly killed in the 90's until the modern classic 1996's SCREAM was released and changed the game completely. I want to get back to the Classic Slasher flicks we all know and love and here is my FIVE POINT PLAN to make it happen . #1. Write Better Scripts : Better Scripts mean better stories . #2 Create Characters You Actually Care About : Invest MORE in the characters when writing. (ever if you want the annoying pot head character to get brutally murdered you still care about him) #3 Create Antagonists that actually scare you : I want to create a killer that makes you afraid to walk across a rook to turn on a light, to walk across a dimly lite parking lot or walk in the woods. #4 Write and Produce Better Kills / Death Scenes : This is a lost art form and I want to find it again and bring it to all future Wicked Carnival Productions . #5 Limit The Number Of Sequels : This is the most important part of my plan because in the 80's and 90's the slasher genre was nearly laid to rest by the number of sequels coming out year after year and with all the movies coming out there was a lack of continuity that hurt the stories but kept the cash coming in, Slasher movies like anything else should be QUALITY over QUANTITY . I care about the genre, that's why I got into film making was to make a difference, leave my mark on it and hopefully leave it better off then it was when I got here. I'm a writer, director and I own Wicked Carnival Productions but I'm a FAN at the end of the day and I bring that with me to production meetings, on set when we're shooting as well as when I'm talking to you folks on a video. I LOVE SLASHER MOVIES and I want nothing more then to #MakeSlashersGreatAgain . If you support Wicked Carnival Productions and want to join the team send out the hashtag #MakeSlashersGreatAgain with your Facebook messages and your Tweets let YOUR voice be heard ! As the founder of Wicked Carnival Productions I'm in a unique position because I control what Wicked Carnival Productions puts out. As the main writer I'm responsible for what is written into our scripts and as the director I'm responsible for what is put on film and released to horror / slasher fans Worldwide ! It's alot of work and alot of responsibilities but I love it because I love to creat movies for my fellow fans of Slashers. Lets #MakeSlashersGreatAgain !! Join the team and DONATE to Sins of Man II : Vengeance HERE STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :)
This blog is at the request of a cool fan named Nicki from Miami who asked if I would write a blog about the ladies of horror. I will not talk about every girl in every film but I will talk about the ladies in the big films TCM, Halloween, Friday The 13th, ANOES, Childs PLay (likely CP2) and Scream. I will also be discussing the ladies of the remakes as well . I will do another blog when I can get some free time after the campaign for Sins of Man II : Vengeance ends next month. **WARNING** This blog will contain some bloody images and might not be suitable for all ages ... By Jamie Santamore This has been a blog that I have wanted to write for awhile but I wasn't sure how to do, if I would write about all the movies in every series (which would be the longest blog I will ever write lol no one wants to read a blog that equals 30 pages, am I right ? Lets get started :) The Texas Chainsaw massacre (1974)Here we have Marilyn Burns who played Sally in Toby Hooper's 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This film was ground breaking in many ways and the film is driven by Sally as she is the "Final Girl" . Granted I haven't seen this film as many times as the others I'm going to talk about but I do enjoy it once in awhile. The story arch between Leatherface and Sally is really well done in this film and she gets away at the end which was very well done . this film is often remembered for the level of bllod, guts, gore and violence but I think this movie was carried by the acting of both Gunnar Hanson (Leatherface) and Marilyn Burns (Sally) may they both rest in peace :) Halloween (1978)Jamie Lee Curtis made her big screen debut as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's 1978 film Halloween, a truly ground breaking film . She has gone on to become a huge star in Hollywood . Most recently Season One of the Fox Horror comedy or spoof titles Scream Queens . The story arch between Laurie and Michael Myers was brilliantly written and really isn't known completely until the second film 1981's Halloween II. Jamie Lee Curtis is an amazing actress who deserves all the fame and praise she gets for her work and unlike many actresses she didn't allow herself to be type cast as a horror girl, not that there is anything wrong with being a genre actor / actress many people have had very successful careers taking this route. Many fans consider Jamie Lee Cutris the #1 Scream Queen of all time nd I can't say I disagree with them based on the fact that Halloween is 37 (almost 38) years old and is still played to this day regularly and still talked about in the industry and loved by fans . Friday The 13th (1980)Adrienne King played the sweet and very adorible Alice Hardy in the 1980 film Friday the 13th written by Victor Miller and directed by Sean S. Cunningham . Adrienne King is a very talented actress who I don't feel ever really got what she deserved in film but that's my opinion. Her story in Friday The 13th is really col and this film was another one that falls into the header of ground breaking films. Adrienne had an amazing battle with the killer who shockingly was Mrs. Voorhees who was a terrific serial killer played by the late great Betsy Palmer. A Nightmare on elm streetHere we have Nancy Thompson played wonderfully by Heather Langencamp in 1984's A Nightmare On Elm Street written and directed by the late Wes Craven . Nancy was different then the other "final Girls" in slasher films prior to this in that her stalker was one that could kill you in your dreams where you are supposed to be safe. Nancy saw her friends all slaughtered at the hands of Fred Krueger (like all other slasher films) and in the end she strips Freddy of his power and she wins the day . CHilds PlayCatherine Hicks starred in 1988's Childs Play and this was at a time iin the genre that films weren't really doing that well and in alot of ways CHilds Play with it's antagonist being a Serial Killer Charles Lee Ray (named after three real life murders) who transforms his soul into a Good Guy Doll and changed his name to Chucky. She wasn't really the Final girl in this movie as much as her young Son was the Final Boy because he was the ultimate target of Chucky. Now if you want to talk Final girl in the Childs Play series, you have to mention Christine Elise who played Kyle in Childs Play 2. She was a strong, street smart kid who knew how to handle herself . She saved Andy from Chucky and the went off together at the end, I wish they had continued the story with her in it some how. Then again I'm a stickler for continuity from one film to the next in a series . By the late 80's and through the early 90's Slashers were on life support and the plug was about to be pulled that is until 1996 when Wes Craven's Scream was released in December of that year . SCREAMNeve Campbell played the role of Sidney Prescott in this ground braking , genre changing film. Scream is one of those films that set itself apart from the other slasher films that came before it. I feel the reason that Scream caught on is because it takes place in the real world with a flesh and blood killer who is pissed about something and will stop at nothing to kill Sidney Prescott and as many of her friends as he can. Scream is one of my favorite films of all time because it has inspired me as a writer and a director . In closing these are just the first installments of these amazing film series I will do another blog about the other ladies of horror at some point in the future when I'm not being pulled in a dozen different directions, the life of an indie film maker, website owner, semi public figure :) I love it but it does get crazy some times. Thank you for being a part of my life and a part of my success as a film maker. Sins of Man II : Vengeance will be released on DVD on HALLOWEEN !

The day of our first Table Read has arrived ! We will be gathering to read the script and talk about the movie and getting to know the cast members . I look at the cast and crew of Sins of Man II : Vengeance as a team and together any team can win it all, right ? When you take a group of individuals and you all come together to work towards a common goal you become a team and you all work hard and push each other to make things work no matter what . We are location scouting with several locations to look at and lock down. Things are in full swing and believe it or not it's all still shocking to me that I'm working on my 2nd feature film . Looking back a year ago when we were getting ready to shoot Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis it was all so new to me, the stress was mounting and I knew it was it was going to be an uphill battle but a battle that could be won if I refused to quit. I remember thinking about a dozen times the first weekend of shooting "This is never going to work" and after the again the second weekend of shooting I thought the same thing and then something changed and everyone really came together and we all decided that we were going to finish this film no matter what, and we did it and we are all very proud of the film and the returning cast members loved the script for Vengeance and are very excited to work on this movie . I think about what everyone put into making this movie happen every time I look at the DVD in my office or the poster from the DVD Release party, that might sound weird but I do . I know the best is yet to come because we're going to shake Sandy Creek Maine to it's core with the things we have planned in Sins of Man II : Vengeance !! We have more action in this film, more blood, guts, gore, more brutal scenes and a great story. As we are well into preproduction we are inching closer to the start date of shooting and I know I'm better prepared for this task then I was on the first movie, we have added safe guards behind the scenes so I don't get over whelmed with all the asks I have to do as well as being in the movie . I'm focused and ready to make this happen ! The shooting schedule is basically worked out I just need to put on the actual shooting schedule forms . I ordered a clapper to make it easier for my editor to piece the film together. I have more hands behind the scenes this time around also. While this is only my 2nd film I feel much more prepared this time around then I ever did on the set of Rise of Mortis and I thin kit's because I was doing so much stuff both in front of the camera and behind the scenes that I really didn't have a chance to take in what was happened until it was all over. I thins now with Vengeance I will have a chance to enjoy it more because I'm not doing 900 jobs I can focus on makeup FX, shooting my scenes and directing the movie. I'm excited to start shooting the movie and making magic happen again, I really want fans to look at this movie and think Wow ! this guy makes good movies !! STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) By : Jamie Santamore Well folks, we're gearing up for the first of two table reads this Friday. The shooting schedule is taking shape we'e locked down the shooting dates. It's been really hard getting things together with only a two man team working behind the scenes with locking down locations I asked the cast to help out and with in a week we got locations coming in. Sometimes all you need is alittle help from your friends. Often you hear indie film makers talk about how when they are onset through all the ups and downs that come with making a film come to life you build relationships with the people you work with and from the outside looking in it sounds like alot of "fluff talk" and I get that it's hard to understand being outside from that view point. As someone who has been in the trenches with people when there was no money in the budget to do much of anything outside what NEEDED to be done to complete the project, no money in the budget for food or lodging for cast and crew and we all camped out on set, I slept in a cold office one night. You do in fact form a bond with people and you lift each other up by motivating each other to continue on a project that feels like it might not make it to the final day, you help each other through the stuff that many people don't talk about. I'll use Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis as an example it was my first film as a director and I had ZERO experience with anything in the film making arena aside from doing some stage acting in school . I was willing to learn and I was passionate about this project because I knew I had a good idea and I knew it could work. Needless to say the first day on set was a disaster to say the least, I was unfocused, unprepared and really had no idea what I was getting myself into I had no shame admitting that then or even now. It wasn't that I couldn't do it, I knew I could I was simply overwhelmed with everything that went into it . I had a very small idea of how to shoot a movie, set u the scene =, get the actors in place and yell action, shoot the scene and yell cut, done and move on, I didn't know about lighting, syncing sound and film I was script supervisor, director, actor, makeup FX artist etc. you know it's very difficult to direct a scene from behind the camera when you're in front of the camera as an actor, it's also hard to do the makeup FX in a scene you're in as well, these are just two of the things I didn't stop to think about before I decided to take a bigger role then my previously planned one scene cameo. Well that's not really fair to say I "decided" to take the bigger role. Before I explain what I mean by this, I'll say this I learned that when it all falls apart on set, as the director it's my job to fix things, with that said I didn't decide anything we lost an actor and the main shooting location for the project due to a family emergency he had to leave the project all together which happened after the second weekend of shooting, so for those keeping score at home the first two weekends were rough. this was another case where we could have all said "well that's it, it's not gonna happen now" I had three choices 1. I could shutdown production and join the many indie film projects that never get finished, 2. I could scramble recast the role before shooting the following weekend or 3. I could take over the role and reshoot the scenes that had the other actor in them. I decided to go with choice 3 because we had worked to hard to get this far and that was the turning point for me really when I knew I would do anything to make sure this movie got finished and I think the events of that week are what gave the cast and crew that bound. I had alot of help from my cameraman, who was working as an actor, audio guy, co director among about a million other things. I didn't think we would make it out of the first weekend of shooting without someone quitting but low and behold we went on with it and we finished on time even with a day of reshoots. My male lead helped out with makeup FX, another actor was my official blood maker. I learned to fix things on set a few times the last time I encountered this was during the final weekend of shooting when one of our cast members failed to show up for the shoot people were lost, confused and unsure what we would do because the actress in question was in the majority of the scenes that day because this was the meat of her story arc, what do we do ?? I said what we're gonna do is do a rewrite and transfer her lines to another character and we dumped the bulk of her lines onto another actress who for all intents and purposes did the best with what we were asking her to do. Over the course of the 9 or 10 weekends we really grew as a team, as a cast and crew and we were able to complete the film and it was released on Halloween 2015. now the returning cast members are joining Chris Fyfe my cameraman , editor, Executive Producer and myself along with our new cast members as we get ready to make Sins of Man II : Vengeance. I'm much more prepared to direct this film, I even wrote a bigger part for my character in this movie because I'm confident I can do it. I will take all the lessons I learned on the set of Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis and make Vengeance a kick ass movie that fans will love to watch !! In Closing I want to say to anyone out there who has a dream weather it's to be a film maker, a baseball player, a writer, an artist or to be the weather person on your local news station NEVER give up on your dreams because you can accomplish ANYTHING you set your mind to, don't listen to the haters and the people saying you can't do it, because you can do it. No one believes in YOU more then you BELIEVE in YOURSELF .
STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) I look at and do things differently then most people in most cases, I look at film making, storytelling, and story structure while at the same time if you look at the way I work it's very similar to how others might do things. I would like to talk to you today about foundation and evolution. Foundation is an important part of building any business, right ? I get asked about the foundation of Wicked Carnival Productions and I have never really given a direct answer to WHAT the foundation is because it's many things that have all come together to build this company . My love of movies is an important piece of the foundation of Wicked Carnival Productions, without the love of movies what sense would it make for me to be the founder of a production company ? Another important piece of the foundation is my love to create things. Many people assume that Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis was my first script but it was actually my 13th or 14th script that I finished. I didn't start out writing horror / slasher scripts believe it or not I started my writing career by writing chick flick / romance movies or all things, I then moved into action scripts and eventually started writing my real passion horror. The foundation to a script is simple because no matter what you're writing the foundation is basically the same you follow the three act structure and the eight sequences of those acts. Three Act Structure : Every story has a Beginning (Foundation) Middle (Building) End (Resolution / Reveal / Finale) This is pretty basic, right ? You learn this in English class in grade school when they want you to write those awful stories in hopes that you'll learn over time to write better. Eight Sequences : This sequence outline is NOT an exact formula just simply something you CAN work from if you choose to. This is building your script from the foundation Sequence I through to The finished film in Sequence VIII. ACT I : Sequence I : Status Quo / Inciting Incident Sequence II : Predicament / Lock In ACT II : Sequence III : First Obstacle / Raising The Stakes Sequence IV : First Culmination / Midpoint Sequence V : Subplot / Rising Action Sequence VI : Main Culmination / End of Act II ACT III : Sequence VII : New Tension / Twist Sequence VIII : Resolution I think the foundation of any story is the characters and the most important characters as it relates to horror are the main character / final girl and the antagonist as well as their relationship . (if there is one) These are the characters that most likely will be driving the story forward for the majority of the film and of course you have the friends and family of the final girl, I mean there has to be bodies to spread all over town while the killer tries to get to his ultimate target, right ? Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis was the foundation of the Mortis character and through out the movie you see Mortis do his thing and slash people and it's nt nti the end when we find out why so what comes after the foundation of Mortis is laid out in Rise of Mortis ?? Evolution of course, in Vengeance you will see the evolution of Mortis as well as JJ and Jayson as they recover from how the events of Rise of Mortis have effected them. I think that is important in a part II of a series but even more so in the 2nd part of a trilogy because you are now in middle of the story mode. Mortis will be out for MORE blood, be MORE violent, have a BIGGER ax to grind and just be more brutal as he continues to build a bloody legacy in the small town of Sandy Creek. It's the evolution of Mortis that will drive not just Vengeance but Sins of Man III as we evolve Mortis into a darker more sinister character and hopefully one that you fans will gravitate to and become long term fans of and who knows if you guys, gals, ghosts and gouls love Mortis enough maybe, just maybe we will bring him back for a Sins of Man IV, V and VI. I would only consider doing Sins of Man films in trilogy format because I think it's best built that way, if I start doing Sins of Man IV and not look at it as another trilogy I fear that it will go the way of the slasher classics and become a "cash grab" and I don't ever want to do that with my films I want my films to be more about story, substance and not just about making money of a dying franchise . Beyond the Sins of Man trilogy Wicked Carnival Productions will continue to build our brand with other films, web series and other projects this is only the beginning for us :) THANK YOU ALL for your continued support as well get ready to unleash Mortis a second time to continue to build on is bloody foundation with Sins of Man II : Vengeance !! STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) People have been asking me about new video content for awhile now and things have been wickedly hectic in the office and as much as I want to create new videos for you all, there aren't enough hours in the day, or so I thought ... I have been able to carve out some time for videos in my daily routine so the schedule will look something like this . *Subject to change without notice* Movie Review I will review a "Classic" Horror film . OFF DAY This will be an office day where I focus on writing, and all the other boring office work :( Random Thoughts This is where I will share all my weird, crazy and well random thoughts that pop into my head while I'm working ... OFF DAY Another day of boring office work :( Movie Review Another Movie review for you folks, I love to talk about movies and and talk to fellow Horror fans so this is something I really enjoy doing . Fan Mail Friday I decided that I will no longer answer fan mail in blog format but rather in video format because it will be alot less time consuming, so keep sending in questions :) Movie Review A 3rd movie review for you crazy fans !?! Hell Yeah ! I will have plenty of movies to review, my wife just signed me up for Horror Pack so I'll be getting four new DVD's a month, I may never run out of movies to review :) Here at sinsofmanmovie.com and wickedcarnivalproductions.weebly.com I want to bring you as much content as possible and love talking to fans as much as I can because I learn from you. That helps us make better content.
If you have a movie you would like reviewed send me an e-mail with the movie title. If you have a blog topic you would like me to write about send me an e-mail with the subject and specifically what you want me to talk about . I want to give horror fans what they want so let me hear it folks !! This is a subject that I have wanted to tackle off and on for awhile now and today it that day I finally do it and I'll tell you why because some one decided that all Slasher bad guys are monsters and couldn't see the opposite side of thinking so here I am to give you dose of reality to those who fail to see the other side of the coin that these killers were once human beings . I'm only going to talk about four of them because we all knw that Chucky was a human who turned into a killer doll so technically a "monster" and Leatherface while a living human beaing was a monster due to his practice of eating people and the fact that he wore his victims skin, Monster through and through. Lets start with everyone's favorite drowning victim turned killer Jason Voorhees . Jason drown in Crystal Lake in the summer of 1957 and later watched his mother being beheaded after her killing spree. Jason returns to the camp in to avenge his mothers murder. I feel differently about the details of this story, they say that Jason drown in 1957 but then watched his mother being beheaded on the lake shore ? I think Jason faked his drowning to save his mother from having to care for him and worry about him any longer, this explains why they never fund a body in the lake, right ? So during his initial killing spree at Cam Blood in Friday The 13th part 2 he's a flesh and blood human as well as in part three finally being "killed" in part four "The Final Chapter" (Yeah right) Jason isn't really in part 5 The New Beginning . (great title if you think about the content of the film) Now you get to the opening of Jason Lives where he is resurrected from the grave by a bolt of lightning NOW Jason is a zombie and no longer a flesh and blood human being. VERDICT : Jason started out Human became a (Zombie) Monster ... Here we have a fine young man named Fred Krueger who was a loving husband to his beautiful wife Loretta and a delightful father to their daughter Kathlyn. Fred had a deep dark secret that he called his "special work" now in this special work Fred would kidnap, torture and kill young children in Springwood. Poor Loretta found out about Fred's special work and after swearing she wouldn't tell Fred gave her a really tight double neck squeeze, Poor Kathlyn promised not to tell and she was taken away after Fred was nearly caught for his crimes. The judge forgot to sign a search warrant in the right place and Fred Krueger was released to contine his special work, what he did count on was the need for justice by the parents of the kids he murdered. they tracked Fred to his boiler room and torched him alive.. End of story, right ? Fred Krueger became the man of everyone's dreams or nightmares dependng on how you look at it. Becoming known now as Freddy Krueger (the added letters to his name are terrorizing aren't they) Frwddy would set out to slaughter every single kid of the parents that torched him in the one place they were helpless in their dreams !! VERDICT : Once again a Human (Monster) to start turned into a Monster ! Next up we have Michael A. Myers a young boy who after trick or treating decided to get a knife and brutally stab his older sister to death on Halloween . 15 years later after a lengthy vacation at Smithsgrove Sanitarium Michael escapes (wish they would've shown this in the classic 1978 film) he goes on a murder spree trying to get to his sister Laura Myers now known as Laurie Strode. After failing to kill Laurie and being shot 6 times by Dr. Loomis Michael continues his pursuit of his sister to Haddonfield Memorial hospital, Dr. Loomis and the police go to the local elementary school where the word Samhain is written on the blackboard in blood. Michael's reign of terror appears to come to an explosive end when the room he's in explodes and he is burnt to death . (much like Fred Krueger in Springwood) Michaelhas a very long, twisting and honestly confusing history and I won't write it all out so much as I will say that due to the "Mark of Thorn" Michael can only stop killing once his entire bloodline is dead. so Michael can't be killed. VERDICT : Michael is PURE EVIL ! A (Human) Monster from birth . Ghostface is someone that has never come back from the dead from one film to the next someone has simply picked up the knife and dawned the Ghostface costume. This is a MAJOR reason I LOVE the scream series because the killer could be ANYONE :) VERDICT : Several Bad Ass Human Beings ! In closing I know this blog might seem alittle weird or short sighted and you are entitled to your opinion because this, like all of my blogs are my opinion. This is how I look at these characters. I hope you enjoyed the blog and I'll be back with another one soon.
STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) I believe in 100% transparency with the Sins of Man / Wicked Carnival Productions fan base and in the interest of transparency I feel I need to address a rumor that has been brought to my attention . I have received 25 emails over the last few days asking me in some form or fashion about a rumor that has been making it's way around, this is the meat of the rumor .. Sins of Man II is being used as a test movie for Wicked Carnival Productions and if it doesn't do well in terms of DVD sales will we "shelf" Sins of Man III in favor of a different project. As the founder of Wicked Carnival Productions and the writer / director of the Sins of Man franchise I think I would know the release schedule of the movies set to be released from my company, don't you ?? I mean if i don't know the schedule who does ?? I don't know where this rumor started but I can tell you it's simply that a rumor that is 100% untrue and Sins of Man III is still on the release schedule no matter how Sins of Man II : Vengeance does in terms of DVD sales. There are only two people who know what the release schedule for Wicked Carnival Productions looks like and they are Chris Fyfe and myself, We have a film a year on the schedule for the next five years in addition to my movie review series for youtube and this website as well as a few unconfirmed projects in (very) early development. I will admit we have discussed and continue to discuss pushing Sins of Man III back a year to 2018 and releasing Wicked Carnival or another one off film in 2017 to give fans a chance to see both Rise of Mortis and Vengeance and build excitement for Sins of Man III . I think it's funny that a small company based out of a small town in Maine that has only released ONE feature film on DVD and a a few movie review videos on youtube and this website is subjected to rumors, they are apart of the job and that's cool with me. it was just weird that with only two people knowing the release schedule for all future projects it makes me curious not so much about WHO started this rumor but HOW this rumor even got started ?? THANK YOU for bringing this to my attention I needed a good laugh :) THANK YOU for supporting Wicked Carnival Productions, the Sins of Man trilogy and for joining me on this crazy ride into film making ! Stay tuned for REAL UPDATES from our office . STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) |
